80451 - Helpful tips for using the different Connector, Shortcut and file format send options
What are some helpful tips for using Connect, using Shortcuts, and using the different file formats when sending?
Connect integrates with Livescribe Desktop only, the older version of our Echo/Pulse smartpen desktop software. The newer version of desktop software, Echo Desktop, does not contain Connect.
If you already have Livescribe Desktop installed, listed below are the different Connector, Shortcut and file format send options and some helpful tips for using them.
If you are not already familiar with Connect, please open Livescribe Desktop. From the top menu select "Help > Online Help" and access the "Livescribe Connect User Guide" on the left sidebar.
Important: Sharing notes and audio via any method other than uploading them to the Livescribe Online MyLivescribe account does not keep them private. To share pencasts privately please use the MyLivescribe Connector.
Also, when using the Add Shortcut button to add custom Shortcuts in the Shortcuts tab, you are currently limited to approximately 50 shortcuts.
Connectors, Shortcuts and File Formats
- Pencast PDF (File format)
Pencast PDF is a newfile format that allows audio to play as active ink in Adobe Reader X (10.0.0 or higher).
If you already have Adobe Reader installed, open it and select Help > Check for Updates… to update to the latest version. If you do not have Adobe Reader installed you will need to go to www.adobe.com/reader and install Adobe Reader to play audio in PDF Pencasts.
Note: By default Mac users have a "Preview" version of Adobe Reader, which is not the same as installing Adobe Reader. To play active ink you will need to install the full version of Reader on your Mac.
- .Pencast (File format)
The .Pencast file format lets you and others exchange and send your smartpen content, including audio, pages, or both. Anyone with Livescribe Desktop installed on their computer can import .Pencast files.
Because .Pencast files are a native Livescribe format, in Livescribe Desktop you can work with imported .Pencast files just like other pages and audio, including viewing and searching pages, playing back audio, and even sending or uploading these files using Connect.
Anyone you share the file with can install Livescribe Desktop (www.livescribe.com/install) and double-click the pencast file. It will open Livescribe Desktop and show up in the Imported Notebooks (Windows) / Imported Pencasts (Mac) section in the left Navigation Pane.
- PDF (File format and Shortcut)
This is an Adobe Reader (any version) format that only displays ink strokes and does not include audio. For PDFs with audio use the PDF Pencast option mentioned above.
- Computer (Connector and Shortcut)
Sending to Computer allows you to store your notes and audio to a location of your choice on your Windows or Mac computer.
- Email* (Connector and Shortcut)
Using the Email Connector you can send notes and audio as attachments using your email client.
You can set up an address book, which will add email addresses to your smartpen for sending email. Click the ">" next to "Address Book:" to expand it, enter the name and email address and click the + Add button.
You can also add phone numbers with the phone carrier email address extensions. Keep in mind that if you send large files (such as PDF Pencasts), or smaller files (such as PNGs or PDFs) in rapid succession, the carrier may block the email(s) as spam. Ask the person you want to send data to who their phone carrier is. For a list of phone MMS (multi-media messaging) email extensions please see:
If you choose to, you can also export a CSV text file of your email addresses from your email client and then use the Import Contacts button to quickly build your address book. Currently there is a limit of approximately 50 addresses that you can import. If your CSV file contains more than 50 entries then open the CSV file, delete all but the 50 addresses you wish to import, save the file, and then import the file.
Note: If you use Microsoft Exchange as your email client and your IT department requires a password change periodically (e.g. every 30 days), after a password change you will need to manually change your password in the Email Connector as well.
If you use Yahoo as your email client, it must be Yahoo Mail Plus, which is a paid subscription email service. Yahoo does not provide SMTP forwarding for their free email service, and Connect requires SMTP forwarding in order for the Email Connector to function.
