85123 - ECHO/PULSE - Livescribe Desktop data missing after Windows 8 upgrade

After upgrading my PC to Windows 8, all of my Livescribe Desktop data is now missing.  Where did it go?

When you upgrade an older Windows operating system to Windows 8, the Windows 8 installer moves all of your previous files to a "C:\Windows.old" folder.

To get your Livescribe Desktop data back, you just need to copy the old data folder to the new location.

First you will need to make sure hidden folders are visible.  To do so:

  1. Right-click in the lower left corner of the Windows desktop.
  2. Select "Control Panel" from the pop-up menu.
  3. Category view - Click on "Appearance and Personalization" and select "Show Hidden Files or Folders".  Icons view - Double-click "Folder Options" and select the "View" tab.
  4. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section, if not already selected, select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and click "OK".

Now you can rename the new data folder and replace it with the old one.  To do so:

  1. Shut down Livescribe Desktop.
  2. Right-click in the lower left corner of the Windows desktop.
  3. Select "File Explorer" from the pop-up menu.
  4. Navigate to "C:\Users\your_windows_account_name\AppData\Local".
  5. Right-click on the "Livescribe" folder, select "Rename", and rename your "Livescribe" folder to something else (for example "Livescribe - New".  This way you can keep the new files as a backup in case you need to access them later).
  6. Navigate to "C:\Windows.old\Users\your_windows_account_name\AppData\Local".
  7. Right-click on the "Livescribe" folder and select "Copy".
  8. Navigate to "C:\Users\your_windows_account_name\AppData" and right-click on the "Local" folder and select "Paste".  This will paste the old "Livescribe" data folder into the Local folder where Livescribe Desktop can read it.
  9. Run Livescribe Desktop.

All of the data from before the Windows 8 upgrade should appear.  If it does not then please let us know.
