85520 - ECHO/PULSE - Audio sessions in Mac Echo/Livescribe Desktop won’t play. Session duration shows -596523 and file size shows 0 Bytes. Pencast is corrupted message

I am trying to play audio sessions in the Mac Echo/Livescribe Desktop but the sessions won't play. The session duration indicator shows -596523 and the file size shows as 0 Bytes.  I see an error "This pencast is corrupted and cannot be played…."

If you are trying to play audio sessions in your Mac Echo or Livescribe Desktop and the following occurs:

  • In "PAGES" view (click on a notebook name to access the notebook pages), the ink is green but nothing happens when you click on the ink.
  • In "AUDIO" view (click on the "AUDIO" button (Win) / "Sessions" option (Mac)), when you double-click the session the Audio Controls player opens but the session duration indicator on the right shows "-596523" and when you click the Play button the play bar indicator jumps from the left to the right but no audio plays.   Also the "Size" of the file shows as "0 Bytes".
  • When trying to play the audio, a message displays "This pencast is corrupted and cannot be played."

...one possible reason for this issue is the transfer from the smartpen to Mac Echo or Livescribe Desktop was interrupted somehow.  To get the session(s) to transfer once more you can try the steps in 201220 - Mac - Renaming the Livescribe data folder.

If the sessions still show "0 Bytes" after renaming the data folder, try this to correct any sessions with the problem:

Audio Linked to Ink

  1. Start audio playback on the smartpen by tapping the ink on one of the notebook pages you were writing on when you recorded the audio session that didn't transfer properly.
  2. Make a note on the page (a simple check-mark on the page will do).
  3. Connect your smartpen to the USB charging cable and the data should start transferring.

Paperless Sessions (Audio Not Linked to Ink)

  1. Start audio playback on the smartpen by using the Nav Plus to navigate to the audio session that didn't transfer properly (20302 - How do I play my audio sessions using my smartpen?).
  2. Make a note on any notebook page (a simple check-mark on the page will do).
  3. Connect your smartpen to the USB charging cable and the data should start transferring.

These steps should resolve any previous "0 Bytes" issues.

If you still have sessions showing "0 Bytes", but you have access to a Windows machine, another option would be to transfer the session(s) from your smartpen to Windows Echo Desktop (www.livescribe.com/install) and then export each audio session to your desktop using the steps in 80960 - ECHO/PULSE - Sharing Echo Desktop pencasts and notes.  Then you can import them into Mac Echo Desktop (if you have Livescribe Desktop installed on the Mac, you will have to update to Echo Desktop in order to import the Livescribe PDFs - www.livescribe.com/install).
