85550 - ECHO/PULSE - Windows - double-clicking a pencast file to import it getting “The file <name>.Pencast cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.”

I am trying to import a pencast file someone sent me that I have saved to my Windows machine, but when I double-click the file to import it into Livescribe Desktop I am getting an error message that the file cannot be opened such as (one example):  The file <name>.Pencast cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.

If you have already installed Windows Livescribe Desktop from www.livescribe.com/install but cannot import a pencast file that was sent to you by double-clicking it because an error message (such as):

"The file <name>.Pencast cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."

…appears, then the pencast file may have been re-associated with an application other than Livescribe Desktop.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Right-click on the pencast file, select "Open with" and then "Choose default program…"
  2. Make sure "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is selected in the lower left, choose "Livescribe Desktop" and then click "OK".  If Livescribe Desktop does not appear then you will need to "Browse…" to its location, click "Open" and then click "OK". For 64-bit machines browse to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Livescribe\Livescribe Desktop\Livescribe Desktop.exe".  For 32-bit machines browse to "C:\Program Files\Livescribe\Livescribe Desktop\Livescribe Desktop.exe".

Livescribe Desktop will open and the imported pencast will appear under "Imports" on the left.
