Getting started with your Symphony smartpen
Here's everything you need to know to set-up and make the most of your new Symphony smartpen.

Turn on for the first time
The Symphony smartpen does not have a power button but straight out of the box, the smartpen is in a powered OFF state. Power ON the smartpen for the first time by plugging one the end of the included micro USB cable into the Symphony smartpen and the other end into a USB power source.
Pair with your device for the first time
The Symphony smartpen will power ON for the first time with a beep and the smartpen LED indicator will turn into blinking blue (happens only the first time) indicating that the pen is ready to pair with your device via Bluetooth.
Now, when the smartpen is available in pairing mode with a blinking blue LED indicator,
Mobile or Tablet
Open the free Livescribe+ mobile app on your phone or tablet, the Livescribe+ App will automatically detect your smartpen
Computer
Open the free Livescribe+ Notes App on your computer > select Pen Manager tab on the top > Click on the Search icon
Smartpen Discovery dialog box will identify and list all smartpens that are available for pairing and in range
Pro Tip: If your pen is not in pairing mode (blinking blue LED) or if you’ve missed the initial pairing window, try additional methods to bring your Symphony into pairing mode and then follow the above steps again.
Start writing
That's it! Unplug the micro USB cable and start writing with your smartpen on any Livescribe dot pattern printed notebook and watch your notes appear real-time on the Livescribe+ App
On/ Off
The Symphony does not have a power button but uses the smartpen cap to turn the smartpen on/ off. When you take the smartpen cap off, the pen turns ON; when you put the smartpen cap back, the pen turns OFF.
Whenever the smartpen is ON, the LED indicator should light up to indicate the smartpen's status. If the LED indicator does not light up when the smartpen cap is removed, it might indicate that your smartpen needs to be charged. Charge your smartpen and try again.
Connect to a different device
When you start writing with your Symphony smartpen on Livescribe notebooks, it automatically tries to reconnect to the last device you used with them (provided the device Bluetooth is turned ON and is in range).
To connect your smartpen to a different device, follow these steps.
Mobile or Tablet

- Open the free Livescribe+ mobile app on your phone or tablet.

- Put the pen into ‘Pairing mode’ (blinking blue LED) by using one of the two available methods.

- When the pen LED is blinking blue, the Livescribe+ App will automatically detect your smartpen

- Pair and Accept Pairing request when prompted. Upon successful pairing, the smartpen will automatically connect with this new device with a beep, and the LED indicator on the pen will stay blue
Computer

- Open the free Livescribe+ Notes App on your computer > Select Pen Manager tab on the top > Click on Search to open the "Smartpen Discovery" dialog box.

- Put the pen into ‘Pairing mode’ (blinking blue LED) by using one of the two available methods.

- When the pen LED is blinking blue, the Smartpen Discovery dialog box will identify and list all smartpens that are in the Bluetooth connection range.

- Select the smartpen that you would like to connect to and click Pair. Upon successful pairing, the smartpen will automatically connect with this new device with a beep, and LED indicator on the pen will stay blue., the smartpen will automatically connect with this new device with a beep and the LED indicator on the pen will stay blue
Charge
Plug your smartpen into a USB power source using the included micro USB cable. It would take a minimum of 2 hours to fully charge your smartpen. Your smartpen provides up to 10 hours of writing time from a full charge and up to 45 days of standby time.
When your smartpen is plugged into the USB power source, the LED indicator light on the smartpen will indicate its status:
- Pulsing Orange: Charging
NOTE: Firmware version 2.6.0.8 and below- Pulsing Green - Steady Green: Fully Charged
Smartpen is blinking red when connected to a charger?
Leave the smartpen plugged into the charger for the battery to be powered up. Do not remove the smartpen from the charger and leave it connected for a minimum of 20-40 mins. Once the battery gets charged, it should power up the smartpen and the smartpen LED will be pulsing orange indicating that it is being charged.
Smartpen enters this pre-charging mode when the battery is completely drained and is left without being charged for some time. It is recommended that users charge their smartpens regularly after every use in order to avoid this situation.
