WIFI/ECHO/PULSE - The 3D recording headset

What is the Livescribe smartpen 3D recording headset?

With your Livescribe smartpen you can record audio with either the built-in microphone or a 3D Recording Headset. The headset comes with the Livescribe Echo smartpen Pro Pack, but not the wifi or standard Echo smartpen as this is a premium item that not all customers are interested in using.  It is also sold separately in the Livescribe online Store (U.S. only) and at participating retailers/resellers (check for availability - http://www.livescribe.com/int/smartpen/retailers.html).

The 3D Recording Headset contains a microphone in each earbud.  The dual microphones enable binaural recordings, which accurately recreate the spatial audio environment.  This type of recording provides the most accurate spatial sound quality because the microphones effectively mimic your ears - when you play a binaural recording back, it sounds like you are actually in the location where the sound was recorded. The jack is proprietary and will only record binaurally with Echo and Wifi pens.

Once recorded, the binaural effect can be played back only using stereo earphones/headphones.  It can also be played back as a regular stereo recording over any type of speakers but you will lose the binaural effect.

Livescribe wifi and Echo smartpens have a standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack for audio playback.  However, if you want to record in stereo you will need to use the Livescribe 3D Recording Headset.

The Pulse smartpen has a custom jack that is required to enable binaural recordings.  If you want to use your own 3.5mm stereo headphone for playback, you can purchase a standard third party 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor which will enable your current headphone to be used in conjunction with your Pulse smartpen.

NOTE:  The wifi/Echo headsets and Pulse headsets are not interchangeable for recording audio.
