How many hours can I use the smartpen before I need to charge the smartpen battery?
Below are the hours of battery life for a new fully charged smartpen. A full charge requires up to 2.5 hours docked to the charging cable.
Livescribe 3 Smartpens
- You can capture text for approximately 14 hours of active writing with Bluetooth on.
Livescribe WiFi Wireless Smartpens
WiFi On:
- You can capture text for approximately 5 hours.
- You can record audio (without text) for approximately 4 hours (depending on the audio compression/quality setting).
- You can record audio and text for approximately 3.5 hours (depending on the audio compression/quality setting).
- You can play back recorded audio from the smartpen speaker at full volume for approximately 2.5 hours.
WiFi Off:
- You can capture text for approximately 6 hours.
- You can record audio (without text) for approximately 11 hours (depending on the audio compression/quality setting).
- You can record audio and text for approximately 5.5 hours (depending on the audio compression/quality setting).
- You can play back recorded audio from the smartpen speaker at full volume for approximately 5 hours.
NOTE: We expect future smartpen firmware updates to further enhance the Livescribe wifi smartpen battery performance.

Echo and Pulse Wired Smartpens
- You can capture text for approximately 6.5 hours.
- You can record audio (without text) for approximately 7.5 hours (depending on the audio compression/quality setting).
- You can record audio and text for approximately 4.5 hours (depending on the audio compression/quality setting).
- You can play back recorded audio from the smartpen speaker at full volume for approximately 3.5 hours.
NOTE for all smartpens: If you turn your smartpen on but do not use it to record or take notes it will turn itself off after one hour in order to conserve battery power. As a notification, the smartpen will make a warning sound a few seconds before powering down. To change the Auto Off time, please see 20307 - Smartpen Settings menu.
